I’m not going to go into how shitty this field is, but it was really slim pickings down below. When Webb Simpson is the top dollar player, you know it’s a pretty weak week. So lets just get to the preview cut and paste and then the breakdown.
Sedgefield is a 7127 yard, Par 70. Not a long course at all. This course has many uphill and downhill holes, so yardages are deceiving. Also, you don’t have to be the most accurate driver to play well at this course and that’s because of the length. 9 of the 18 holes will probably only require a wedge into the greens, and it’s easier to hit short irons from the rough with some accuracy than with the long irons. This is a very tee to green type course. The average rate in which players hit these small greens are off the charts, at 73% GIR since 2008. That’s pretty high to be the average. So besides short iron GIR from on and off the fairway, we’ll also look for proximity play with the short irons as well. Why? These greens are undulating and and the shorter putts you have on these types of greens, the better.
The common theme with golfers that play well here is Strokes Gained Tee To Green. We’ll be focusing on that contingent this week the most. Fairways and greens.
So to recap: We’re looking for Tee to Green Players, with strong Proximity play, those that can hit short irons from the fairway and the rough. As always, we love great putters, and if you can scramble a little, we’ll take that too. Last but not least, look for history and we’d like our players to have some form.
Now for the breakdown.
Julian Suri 100% – He was cheap and coming off two solid performances amongst the worlds best. He’s also 26th on the Euro Tour in strokes gained tee to green. We hope that stat translates to this course for the week.
Harold Varner 100% – He was 10th here last year and his game is back on track in a big way. His form has rounded into shape and now he’s looking to win.
Chris Kirk 75% – His SGTG this year is pretty darn good so we’re betting on him over coming his history at this course. His price was too good to pass up for a guy that makes lots of cuts with some upside.
Joaquin Niemann 75% – We’re just waiting for this rookie to win. It will come. Also, he’s 15th in SGTG.
Johnson Wagner 75% – He’s a streaky player and he now seems to be in a solid streak of golf at the moment. He has yet to get that big finish but here’s a course he’s been 5th at before. We’ll take the risk in this crappy field.
Brendan Steele 75% – Two of his Three missed cuts this year were at Majors, and yes his play hasn’t been top notch lately. However, he’s still making cuts and this field stinks. So we’ll pray that he has upside at his cheap price. He was 11th here in 2013.
Rory Sabbatini 50% – Has two top 10’s at this course and is playing decent golf as of late. His price was right.
