Daily Fantasy Golf Picks Preview | Valero Texas Open 2018

Straight out of San Antonio, It’s time for the Valero Texas Open 2018. It’s a tournament without much fanfare, But guess what? We don’t give a fuck, and that’s why you’re here too. So let’s do some digging.

First things first, the course. The TPC San Antonio is a 7,435 yard, par 72, with narrow fairways, deep bunkers,  and some nasty native vegetation areas. Just ask Kevin Na about the nastiness of the native areas, as he took a 16 on a par four some years ago. That’s nasty. Real nasty. The course is long, but yet it’s not. The Par 3’s and Par 5’s are among the longest on Tour, but the Par 4’s are the 7th shortest on tour. Sounds too easy, huh? I forgot to mention the wind. The other main defence of this course is the wind, so make sure you check the weather report before hand.

. *Sidenote: This course has been used for the Valero since 2010, so disregard any finishes by players before that.

We went through shot histories and half their approach shots were from 125 yards and in, and the other half was from 175 and above. There were also a bunch of 200 plus yard shots as well. So we went through Top 10’s since 2010, and we noticed that players who can hit both of these types of iron shots played well here. Also, in different years, greens were hit at different rates, all depending on the wind. Some years it was terrible, some were the average. So we believe that’s how some of those scrambler/putters got their names up on the leaderboards too. This is a place, where some years, scrambling becomes more important than others, depending on weather. We were going to add the category of GIR from other than fairway, but we think the whole of scrambling will take this into account.

Players that have played well here since 2010 include: Brendan Steele, Adam Scott, Daniel Summerhays, Jim Furyk, Freddie Jacobson, Charley Hoffman, Pat Perez, Cameron Tringale, Jordan Spieth, Aaron Baddeley, Bob Estes, Jason Kokrak, Jimmy Walker and Martin Laird.

Before I wrap this up, let’s just conclude the stat categories we’re looking for, in order: GIR from 125 and in, GIR from 175 plus, and the overall scrambling category, as we think people will be off the fairway and into some nasty things, then also missing the green possibly at a higher clip than normal. As always, we love form, history, putting, and this week, Texans!
